M.Sathyanarayana Rao, M. Rajasekhar Prevalence of Yersinia Antibodies and its Relevance in the Serodiagnosis of Bovine Brucellosis, Onl J Vet Res., 5:47-535, 2001. A serological survey of bovine yersiniosis was performed in India to determine if Y. enterocolitica serotype O:9 is
responsible for false positive reactions in the diagnosis of
brucellosis. A total of 1521 bovine sera were tested. Of these, 505
were positive and 1016 negative to Brucella
spp with avidin-biotin
ELISA. A total of 108 were positive for Yersinia antibodies (7.1% incidence) of which 43 were positive
for both yersiniosis and brucellosis, and 65 were
positive for yersiniosis with antibodies against Y.
enterocolitica other than serotype O:9. The
Yersinia test did not identify false positive brucellosis reactions; for Y. enterocolitica O:9 (or other
Yersinia species) and B. abortus, only a Brucella test will diagnose the
disease. Monoclonal antibody ELISA, Lymphocyte transformation or
Interferon-gamma assay may be more specific for Brucella spp. The results suggest a low incidence of Y.
enterocolitica O:9 in Indian cattle.
