ABSTRACT
Kheirandish R, Azizi S,
Azari O, Nasri A., A pathologic study of cutaneous
xanthoma in a domestic pigeon, Online J Vet Res., 17 (1): 7-12, 2013. Xanthomas are inflammatory lesions which may
be single or multiple and appear as papillary nodules to raised plaques. All
tissues and internal organs of humans or animals may be affected. The present
study describes a case of cutaneous xanthoma in a 4 year old pigeon. A firm
texture well demarcated yellow nodule with a semi-pedunculated base was found
on the right wing. The overlying epithelium presented multifocal ulcerations
covered by feathers. Histology showed
infiltration by numerous, large, foamy macrophages with eccentric nuclei and
varying numbers of lymphocytes, eosinophils, and multinucleated giant cells in
the superficial and deep dermis. A large number of extracellular needle-like
cholesterol clefts were present in the lesion. On the dermis mild to moderate
acanthosis and hyperkeratosis were observed. Multifocal necrosis and
ulcerations were clearly visible on the epidermis. A diagnosis of cutaneous xanthoma was thus made.
