Detection of anti-Leptospira antibodies in aqueous
humor of horses with naturally occurring uveitis

humor of horses with naturally occurring uveitis, Online J Vet Res., 14 (2): 212-217, 2010. Anti-Leptospira
specific antibodies in serum and aqueous humor were monitored in 199 horses were
assessed by ophthalmological examination. In those with uveitis, aqueous humor
was tested for specific antibodies and spirochetes. 27.1% of blood samples had
high blood titers of Serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae.
Of 54 seroreactive animals, 38 exhibited uveitis
of which 31.6% (of the aqueous humor samples), had titers < 25, 21.1% of 25,
50% of 50, and 13.2% ≥ 100, mostly against Icterohaemorrhagiae. Dark field
microscopy did not reveal leptospires in any sample.
These findings suggest that equine uveitis may occur by cross-reaction of
antibodies with uveal antigens, not particularly requiring L. Icterohaemorrhagiae.
