M., Partial hepatectomy in a myna bird (Acridotheres
tristis) with abdominal hernia, Onl
J Vet Res., 21(6):301-307, 2017. A 1yr old common myna presented with abdominal
distention and an open wound. Upon examination and radiography, hepatomegaly
and abdominal hernia were diagnosed. The bird was anesthetized with isoflurane
and oxygen for ventral celiotomy with partial hepatectomy by guillotine. Hepatic lipidosis
was confirmed by microscopy and the bird was confined in a cage to restrict
movement for 2 weeks. The bird recovered completely without any complications.
The follow up for 6 months revealed sound recovery. To the author’s knowledge,
this is the first report of managing abdominal hernia by partial hepatectomy in birds with hepatomegaly. This procedure can
be recommended in birds suffered from combination of hepatomegaly and abdominal
hernia.
Keywords: Common myna, lipidosis, hernia, partial hepatectomy.
