ABSTRACT
Varadharajan A, Kothandaraman S, Gnanasekar
R., Effect of aqueous leaf extracts of Azadirachta indica, M. indica, P. longifolia, A. squamosal, and F. benghalensis
on Rhipicephalus microplus
ticks, Onl J Vet Res., 23 (11):1070-1074, 2019. Tick infestations pose a major threat to livestock. The main tick
species found in domestic animals of India is Rhipicephalus
[Boophilus] microplus.
Plant extracts can inhibit growth of ticks. We evaluate effect of 10mg/ml Azadiracta indica (AI), Mangifera indica (MI), Polyalthia longifolia (PL),
Annona squamosal (AS), and Ficus benghalensis (FB) leaf aqueous
extract drops on time (s) for 100% mortality of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks. Compared with
water controls (no tick mortality) those treated with AI died 180, MI 210, PL 170, AS 180 and FB 210 seconds.
Combinations of 10mg/ml (total dose) AI,
AS with PL 38, FB, MI with PL 42, and AI, AS, PL, FB with MI 30 seconds. Our findings suggest
that our individual plant extracts killed all Rhipicephalus microplus ticks within 170-210 seconds whereas
combinations at 30-42 seconds.
Key words: cattle
tick control, Rhipicephalus [Boophilus] microplus, Herbal extracts.
