ABSTRACT

Kalantar H, Nouri M, Mohammadian B, Hashemnia M, Noroozi  M., Thyroid tuberculosis in sheep: a case report, Onl J Vet Res., 17(8):444-449, 2013. To our best knowledge, we describe a first report of thyroid tuberculosis in sheep. A 3-year-old ewe presented with a history of an enlarging mass on the proximal part of the neck. The mass was firm, oval, moveable, and approximately 5 x 2.5 cm in diameter. Histopatological examination revealed a central coagulum of caseous necrosis, consisting of eosinophilic homogeneous material, mantle of giant cells and macrophages, a capsule containing lymphocytes and a rim of collagenous connective tissue. The morphopathologic diagnosis was thyroid tuberculosis. Acid fast staining confirmed diagnosis which demonstrated numerous acid-fast bacteria within giant cells.

Key words: Thyroid tuberculosis, histopatology, neck, sheep
