viral disease of global concern.
Wide ranges of bird species are susceptible to the infection. The aim of this study was to assess the shedding pattern of chicken
origin H9N2 avian influenza (AI) virus in ostriches. Five 70-day-old ostriches
were inoculated intranasally with a low pathogenic
A/Chicken/Iran/SH-110/99(H9N2) virus. Clinical signs and viral titer in the
tracheal swab, cloacal swab
and sera were determined using TaqMan real time PCR. Only two birds showed mild clinical signs. The virus was
detected in the tracheal swab and cloacal
swab of the infected ostriches 7 days and 11 days post-inoculation,
respectively. The maximum
virus titer in the tracheal swab and cloacal swab was detected on day 7 PI. In
comparison with trachea, the virus was recovered in the cloaca for a longer time. Virus was not
detected in serum samples. This
study suggests that a weak pathogenic H9N2 AI virus of chicken origin can
replicate and shed in the heterologous host without
causing severe clinical disease or mortality.
