ABSTRACT
Nkhela AM, Abdulwahid MT, Effects of Bacillus subtilis and selenium supplement on performance,
hematology, lipids and immunity in Ross Broilers, Onl
J Vet Res., 22 (11):1062-1067, 2018. Groups of 50 day
old Ross 308 broilers each were given a basal diet (controls) supplemented with
0.2gm/kg B. subtilis, 300 mcg Selenium/kg or 0.2gm B. subtilis with 300 mcg Se
/kg feed daily for 35 days. Production traits were determined weekly and blood taken
at 9, 20, and 35 from groups of 5 broilers each for hematology, blood lipids
and antibody titers against Newcastle vaccine. Compared with controls, in
broilers fed both supplements we found increased (P ≤ 0.05) body weights,
total protein and high density lipoprotein. In those given selenium supplement
we found reduced (P < 0.05) cholesterol and triglycerides. Compared with controls, in broilers supplemented with selenium with
or without B subtilis, white, red blood, packed cell volumes and ND antibody
titer increased by 35 days of age. We find that selenium with or without
B subtilis supplement may improve production in Ross 308 broilers.
