Growth of Bacillus subtilis probiotic in various media and effect on
Salmonella Typhimiurium, Onl J Vet Res., 20(11):698-703, 2016. We describe growth rate of probiotic Bacillus subtilis in
Nutrient broth (NB), Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB), Brain-Heart Infusion Broth (BHI)
and Mueller Hinton Broth (MHB) media incubated at 37°C for 24h. Effect of crude
antibacterial substances (CAS) from Bacillus subtilis on In
Vitro inhibition of Salmonella Typhimurium is
reported.Greater growth (1.3×109 CFU/ml)
occurred in double strength TSB but least (8×104 CFU/ml) B.
subtilis 6633 in double strength MRS broth. Greater growth for B.
subtilis PY79 occurred in TSBYE (2.2×108 CFU/ml), BHIB
(2.1×108 CFU/ml) and TSB (2.1×108 CFU/ml) but
least in NB (106 CFU/ml) and MRS (3×106 CFU/ml)
(P<0.05). The minimum inhibitory concentration for S typhimurium occurred
at 80mg/ml of CAS from ATCC 6633 50% and lowest area under the curve 4.49%.
At 2.5 mg/ml MIC was 0.8% and AUC 10.60% (P<0.05). CAS from PY79 had no
inhibitory effect on S Tiphymurium
Key words: probiotic; Bacillus subtilis; enrichment
