ABSTRACT
Vali R, Miri A Reference radiographic measurements for navicular bone of Dareh-shori horses, Onl J Vet Res., 21(7):428-432,
2017. Navicular
abnormalities have long been considered a common cause of forelimb lameness on
horses. Hooves of 10 normal Dareh-shiri horses were
marked by contrast and radiographed with a portable X- ray
unit using 5MAS and 80 kVP exposure with limb
in vertical position. Dorsopalmar and lateromedial radiographs were
fixed onto a horizontal viewing box and lines were drawn with a fine tipped
pen. Measurements were made from each
radiograph of the proximal-distal
borders of the navicular bone in lateral projection, lateral-medial
and proximal-distal in dorso-palmar projection after correcting for magnification The proximal-distal
borders of the navicular bone measured 14.75 ± 1.4mm, lateral-medial 44.85 ±
3.64mm and proximal-distal 24.6 ± 3.34mm. Measurements differed from those
reported in other horses breeds. The values could be
used as reference for diagnosis of navicular abnormalities of front feet of Dareh-shori horses.
