MR., Ectrodactyly in a shitzo
puppy: Onl J Vet Res., 18(10): 830-836, 2014. An
8-week-old male Shitzo puppy was referred for
evaluation of a deformity of the right forelimb. Ectrodactyly
has been described in dogs and domestic cats as a rare congenital heterogeneous
disease. Function may vary from mild disability to complete non-weight bearing.
Clinical signs of deformity and lameness may progress with age. The dog
exhibited signs of lameness and pain on the dorsal aspect of the carpus when it
was flexed. Under physical
examination pain was recognized on the elbow and carpal joint of the malformed
forelimb but general clinical examination revealed no other problems. Severe
cases require amputation of the affected limb and some are treated by carpal
joint arthrodesis. In the current case the condition will be
monitored to consider
surgery in the adult dog.
Key words- Ectrodactyly,
congenital malformation, agenesis.
