Sequential evaluation of proteinuria, albuminuria and urinary protein electrophoresis in dogs with diabetes mellitus.

Martorelli CR, Kogika MM, Caragelasco DS, Simões DMN, Kanayama KK., Sequential evaluation of proteinuria, albuminuria and urinary protein electrophoresis in dogs with diabetes mellitus, 20(8):547-556, 2016.  Systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, complete blood count, biochemical serum profile, abdominal ultrasound, urinalysis, urine culture, urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC), albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UAC), and percentage of high and low molecular weight protein were determined every 30 days for 6 months in 10 dogs with diabetes mellitus. Similar measurements were done on 14 normal control dogs.  Diabetic dogs were treated for glycemia and none developed systemic arterial hypertension. Diabetic dogs maintained normal UPC without albuminuria (UAC < 0.03) at follow up. Dogs did not show any nephropathy suggesting that appropriate glycemic control with normal blood pressure may have protected renal function in diabetic dogs.
