ABSTRACT

L, Shamsi M., Bovine sarcocystosis: prevalence rates and cyst wall
characteristics, Onl J Vet Res., 18(8): 662-667, 2014. Sarcocystis spp are obligatory two-host parasites. In
livestock, sarcocystosis lead to reduced
weight-gain,
abortion and/or acute fatal illness. Skeletal muscle is the aim tissue in
intermediate hosts. Prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in slaughtered cattle from a Kerman
abattoir in Iran is reported. Esophagus and diaphragmatic muscles were
collected from 102 cattle and examined grossly and by microscopy for sarcocysts. Macroscopic sarcocysts
were not found in any muscle sample. In contrast, under light microscopy, 99 of
102 samples revealed thin-walled cysts due to S. cruzi
and 25 presented
thick-walled cysts. The most infected tissues were the esophagus and lesser
diaphragmatic muscles. Degenerate parasitic cysts enclosed variable numbers of
inflammatory cells including eosinophils, lymphocytes, macrophages and plasma
cells. In a few cases, granulomatous reaction occurred around the cysts. These results report a very high incidence of Sarcocystis
in cattle.
Key words: Sarcocystis,
thin-walled, thick-walled cyst, cattle, macroscopic, microscopic findings.
