are protected against Avian reovirus (ARV) by
antibodies transferred from vaccinated maternal flocks. The effect of
vaccination of chicken breeders on antibody response to ARV in growing chickens is described. Breeder broiler flocks (35) were
vaccinated at 18 and 22 weeks age against ARV infection with inactivated oil
emulsion vaccine reovirus strain S1133. Six
flocks were used as non-vaccinated controls. Blood samples from all flocks
(1415 birds) were collected taken during the 1st and last week (4th)
of the growing period and tested by ELISA for antibodies against ARV. Antibodies against ARV were found in all tested flocks. 35 flocks were positive and 28 of these had high titers.
Seven flocks had positive titers with 4
to 7 days old chicks having the highest titers. However, in the 28 flocks titers fell by the 4th
week with 5 flocks showing signs of infection.
