 Effect of Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) on blood lipid concentration and antioxidant status of broiler chickens

Ghorbani MR, Bojarpur M, Mayahi M, Fayazi J, Fatemi Tabatabaei R, Tabatabaei S., Effect of Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) on blood lipid concentration and antioxidant status of broiler chickens, Online J Vet Res., 17 (2): 54-63, 2013.  The effect of purslane on plasma lipid concentration and blood antioxidant status of broiler chickens is described. Twelve groups of 12 each day old Ross 308 broiler chicks received diets with 1 and 2% dried purslane for 42 days. Controls (12 chicks) were not given purslane. At day 42, 8 chicks from each group were bled via the brachial vein for total antioxidant activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4 chicks for plasma lipids. Results showed that except for triglyceride (TG), there was no significant difference in blood cholesterol, HDL-c or LDL-c concentrations between any group. However, at day 42, blood SOD was significantly higher in chicks fed 2% compared with control values. A reduced MDA and GPx concentration but increased TAA value was found in broilers fed purslane at 1 and 2% compared with controls. Results suggest that purslane may prevent oxidative stress in broilers.
