ABSTRACT
Roy S, Mukherjee P, Acharyya S, Nandi SK., Management of Submandibular Abscess in a Porcupine (Hystrix
indica,) Onl J Vet Res 13 (2):19-23, 2009. A 12 yr old
porcupine (Hystrix Indica)
with anorexia was diagnosed with an abscess requiring ‘pointing’ for surgical
drainage. Hot compressions with magnesium sulphate
and Ceftrioxone orally was administered for 3
days. A small surgical incision was made on the pointing area to evacuate pus
which was collected for culture and sensitivity test. Cultures revealed no
bacterial growth up to 48 hours post inoculation. The abscess cavity was
irrigated with 0.1% potassium permanganate and dressed daily with sterile gauze
soaked in 5% povidone iodine solution along with 125 mg of Ceftrioxone
intramuscularly once daily for 5 days. Salt lick was provided. After 15 days
post drainage, again a swab was taken from the abscess cavity, which on culture
demonstrated no growth in media. This report is a case of successfully
managed submandibular abscess in a porcupine
with uneventful
recovery.
