P. atlantica has been used to treat peptic
ulcers, mouth freshener and as an antioxidant in vegetable oil. Effects of P. atlantica gel on blood antioxidant enzymes and biochemistry in skin wounded rats are
described. Skin 2x2 cm wounds were
created in 4 groups of 25 anaesthetized rats each. Each group was given gel
with 5, 10, 0% (gel controls) P. pistacia extract or no gel (untreated controls). Blood
was taken 3, 7, 10, 14 and 21 days post-wound. Superoxide dismutase enzymes
decreased after wound creation in controls but increased in treated rats. Malondialdehyde increased in controls but decreased in
treated groups. Rats treated with 10% P Pistacia gel exhibited increased collagen in wounds
compared with controls.
