ABSTRACT

Zo Ahmed Zakri MM, Noor Al-Taai A, Khalil NK., Zoonotic and pathogenic bacteria in feces of pet shop birds. Onl J Vet Res., 20(7):448-452, 2016.     Zoonotic and pathogenic bacteria were identified in 117 pigeon, canary, parrot, cockatoo, love, ghandor, fingis and zhagel bird fecal samples from pet shops in Baghdad, Iraq. Bacteria were identified by culture, gram stain confirmed by TSI, lactose fermentation, urease, Indole, motility, H2S, and citrate tests. Incidence was E-coli 59 (32.96%), Salmonella 14(7.82%), Klebsiella 21(11.73%), Yersinia 4(2.23%), Shigella 10(5.58%), Staphylococcus spp. 48(26.82%) and Streptococcus spp. 23(12.85%). Humidity, pH, oxidation-reduction or nutrient content may account for differing microbial populations. Results suggest high levels of Staphylococcus spp. and other potential pathogenic/resistant bacteria in pet shop birds.
