ABSTRACT

Goodarzi N., Electron microscope structure of dorsal lingual epithelium of Persian squirrel Sciurus anomalus, Onl J Vet Res., 18(2):132-144, 2014.  A scanning electron microscope study describes morphologic characteristics of the dorsal lingual epithelium of the Persian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus). This species is the only representative of the Sciuridae family in the Middle East and is used as a companion animal. The tongues of 3 adult squirrels were studied in anterior, middle and posterior sections which showed one mechanical and two gustatory dorsal papillae. Anterior and posterior third leaf-like and two middle third bird tongue-like and conical filiform papillae were evident. Dome shaped fungiform papillae were scattered among the filiform papillae particularly with a high and dense like appearance on the lingual apex. Three circumvallate papillae on the posterior third of the tongue were arranged in a triangle. The above structures are illustrated in the electron microscope photographs.

Key words: Lingual epithelium ; persian squirrel ; scanning electron microscope (SEM).
