Effect of Pediococcus diacetilactis and Lactobacillus reuteri and their cultured filtrates

on growth of antibiotic resistant E. coli and S. aureus.

Effect of Pediococcus diacetilis and Lactobacillus reuteri lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from whole wheat sourdough and their cell free culture filtrate (CCF) on growth of antibiotic resistant E. coli and S. aureus is described. LAB isolates were identified by PCR and components of CCF were analyzed by gas chromatography. LAB had a significant (P<0.05) effect on growth of gram-positive bacterium but P. diacetilactis per se had no effect on growth of E. coli or S. aureus. Most inhibition occurred in crude LAB filtrate but there were no significant differences with neutral or treated CCFs. The filtrates appeared to inhibit S. aureus rather than E. coli except for crude filtrate of P. diacetilactis which inhibited E coli. Components of filtrate of P. diacetilactis determined by GC/MS included long chained fatty acids, fatty acid esters and amides, aldehydes, dicarboxylic acids, piperidines, quinolone derivatives and dipeptides. Findings suggest that the filtrate of P. diacetilactis CCF may affect growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
