Molecular characterization of Escherichia coli types from diarrheic and healthy dogs.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains are commensal inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. However, a variety of E. coli types have been associated with diarrheal illness in dogs. E. coli from fecal samples of 65 dogs with acute diarrhea and 104 non-diarrheic ones were typed and a phylogenetic tree was constructed. We found phylogenetic groups: A (56.80%), B1 (13.06%), B2 912.42%) and D (17.15%) with 32.54% having at least one virulence gene and 65.08% without any. Necro-toxic E. coli were most prevalent with 26.15% diarrheic and 21.15% healthy dogs positive for cnf1 gene, respectively. stx1 gene was found in 2 isolates (1.18%) from diarrheic and healthy dogs, whereas stx2 gene in 2 from diarrheic dogs. We detected 12 (7.10%) eae enteropathogenic E Coli strains 10.8% from diarrheic and 4.80% from healthy dogs. None of the isolates had ST1, LT1, cnf2 or ipaH genetic markers. We find similarities in phylogenetic distribution of E. coli isolates from diarrheic and healthy dogs; although there are differences in presence and prevalence of virulence genes between both groups.
