ABSTRACT

Parthiban S, Pothiappan P, Mukhopadhyay HK., Hematology and treatment of parvovirus in canine pups, Onl J Vet Res.,  29 (3): 139-142, 2025. Hematology and treatment of parvovirus infection in 20 canine pups is described. We confirmed parvovirus by 20 PCR primer pairs Hfor /Hrev in 6-8 week old pups and compared results from 4 normal controls. Hematology revealed low white blood cells (WBC) in 80% pups (3 – 5 × 103/µL ), low red blood cells (RBC) counts in 60% pups (4 - 5 × 106/µL),  low hemoglobin (Hb) values in 50% pups (6-11 g/dl) and the differential leukocyte counts showed  neutropenia in 85% pups and Lymphopenia in 60% pups. All the affected pups were treated symptomatically. All affected pups were treated with 20mg/kg intravenous (iv) cefotaxime sodium @20mg/kg, 0.2 mg/ kg Perinorm, 1mg/kg Pantoprazole iv, 10 ml/kg DNS iv and 10ml/kg iv Ringer’s lactate BID for 5 days. Fourteen pups recovered completely within five days. Three pups recovered completely within seven days. Three pups with severe leucopenia and neutropenia died in therapy.
