ABSTRACT

Kafi M, Tamadon A, Bahrami A., Estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol from ovarian cysts in cows infected by Arcanobacterium pyogenes in utero, Onl J Vet Res., 29 (1): 7-10, 2025. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated from uterus of a 5 year-old multiparous Holstein cow with macerated fetus, multiple ovarian follicular cysts and purulent vulvar discharges. Herd was free of brucellosis but serologically positive for neosporosis and bovine viral diarrhea virus infection. At post-mortem, uterine horns appeared asymmetrically edematous and enlarged due to a macerated fetus and putrefied remnants of fetal tissues and bones. The fetal head showed a 5 month pregnancy in right horn. Right ovary was 7×7×4.5 cm and left 4.5×3.5×2.5 cm, with multiple follicular cysts with no corpus luteum. Follicular fluids were aspirated for estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol by RIA kits. From both ovaries we found ~0.91-0.93 testosterone, 344-494 estradiol, 44-54 progesterone and 88.8-23ng/ml cortisol. Findings suggest ovarian follicular cyst was associated with uterus infection by Arcanobacterium pyogenes.

Key Words: Ovary, cysts, Arcanobacterium pyogenes, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, bovine.
