J, Ginés JA, Pérez EJ., Neosporosis in calf unusual neurological presentation, Onl J Vet Res., 28 (10):
752-757, 2024. We describe clinical and pathological findings from a
15 day old Limousine calf with incoordination
and limb paralysis. Tissues were cultured for aerobic and
microaerophilic organism. For microscopy, nervous tissues and hematology were determined and for serology, antibodies to Neospora caninum by
ELISA. In brain cortex, we found non-suppurative meningoencephalitis, necrosis and apoptosis in
neurons. In heart, we observed interstitial myocarditis, degeneration and
necrosis with leukocyte infiltration. Liver presented periportal
mononuclear cells with necrotic foci. We found moderate leucopenia
of 3.2 x 103μl, elevated creatine
phosphokinase 176 UI/L suggesting muscle damage. Multifocal encephalitis with
myocarditis is strongly suggestive of Neospora spp.
Key
words: Calf, Neospora caninum, brain,
encephalitis.
