Synoviae by plate agglutination and Elisa tests
in commercial broiler chickens

Vet Res., 19(9): 593-597, 2015. Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) causes
economic losses to the poultry industry through joint and/or respiratory
pathology. Mycoplasmosis can be diagnosed by serum
plate agglutination (SPA), hemagglutination
inhibition (HI), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and/or PCR. We
describe serum results from SPA and ELISA tests for detection of antibodies against
MS in commercial poultry flocks. 441 blood samples were collected from poultry
flocks from different location in 52 to 58 day old broilers. 27% (119) were
positive to SPA, but only
14% (65) to ElISA tests. ELISA has a high level of specificity whereas SPA test does not, which
results in a high number of false positives using SPA. Therefore SPA results
have to be reconfirmed by HI or ELISA. Results suggest that SPA should only be
used for initial screening in commercial broilers and that PCR test is the most
precise one.
