Res, 15 (1): 98-105, 2011. The effect of radio frequency (RF) waves produced by a mobile base
station on serum thyroid hormones and biochemistry are described. Twenty immature and 20
mature Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 10 sham exposed controls and test
exposed groups each. Test groups were exposed to RF five hours a day for 70
days. At 70 days, blood was collected by heart puncture for serum
determinations Compared with unexposed control rats, T4 levels were higher
in mature ( 91.5 ± 14.92 vs 60.1± 6.0 ng ml-1) and immature (82.83 ±
17.21 vs 51.75 ± 2.8 ng ml-1)
rats. However, T3 increased only in mature rats (1.43 ± 0.51 vs 0.55 ± 0.13 ng
ml-1). Compared with non-exposed controls all serum enzymes
increased in immature rats whereas only changes in AST and CK occurred in
adults. HDL concentrations decreased in all exposed rats. Cholesterol and TG
did not vary significantly between immature and mature exposed rats, but LDL
decreased significantly in adults compare with controls. These results
suggested that exposure to radio waves had an effect of serum thyroid and biochemical values which
appeared more significant in immature rats.
