ABSTRACT

Razzaghi Manesh SM, Rafie SM, Arfaee F, Bayat M., Effect of Artemisia sieberi and Terbinafine 1% on Trichophyton mentagrophytes infection in Guinea pigs, Onl J Vet Res., 20(3):199-204, 2016. Effects of Artemisia sieberi essence or Terbinafine 1% cream on experimental dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes in guinea pigs are described. Standard protocol M38-A (CLSI) was used to determine minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.1µg/mL for Artemisia sieberi essence. Groups of 6 guinea pigs each were treated after day 5 of infection every 12 hours with Terbinafine 1% cream or A. sieberi essence. Controls were non-treated infected and non-infected saline guinea pigs. Animals were evaluated clinically and by laboratory tests recorded in SPSS. By 6 weeks, Artemisia sieberi had reduced (p<0.05) fungal infections 100% and Terbinafine ~67%. Results suggested that Artemisia sieberi essence may improve treatment of Trichophyton mentagrophytes dermatophytosis.
