ABSTRACT
Silva PHS, Cruz LKS, Ferreira BM, Falcão
MSA., Meniscus height and schirmer
tear tests in brachycephalic dogs, Onl J Vet Res., 26 (8): 620-625, 2022. Muco aqueous tear
film layer, is essential for function of ocular
surface. Function can be evaluated by Schirmer tear,
strip meniscometry and tear meniscus height tests
with ocular surface analysis. Twelve healthy female and 6 male Shihtzu dogs aged 4.7 ± 3.9 years accounting for 36 eyes
were examined. Mean meniscus tear tests were 0.74 ± 0.32 mm (CI 95% 0.63:0.84)
whereas Schirmers were 21.08 ± 5.19 mm/min (CI 95%
19.33:22.84). For right eye meniscus values were 0.59 ± 0.29 mm (CI 95% 0.45:
0.74) and Schirmer 19.06 ± 4.87 (CI 95% 16.63:21.48)
whereas left one 0.88 ± 0.28 mm (CI 95% 0,74:1,02) and 23.11 ± 4.80 mm/min (CI
95% 20,72:25.50). By unpaired t-test we
found difference for both tests (P < 0.0046 - 0.0167)) between eyes. Both (r
= 0.421; p = 0.011) correlated by Pearson tests. We find that tear meniscus
height can accurately measure tear production in brachyocerphalic
dogs. More studies are necessary to evaluate if there is a difference between
the height of the meniscus of brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs.
