ABSTRACT
Chalmeh A, Badiei K, Pourjafar M, Nazifi S., Effects
of intravenous dexamethasone and flunixin meglumine on Escherichia coli serotype O55:B5 induced endotoxemia in ewes,
Onl J Vet Res.,
18(7):
596-606, 2014. Groups of five 1yr old normal ewes each were administered intravenous (IV) 20
µg/kg lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli serotype O55:B5 with IV
fluid therapy for 120min. At 180min ewes were given dexamethasone 1mg/kg or flunixin meglumine 2.2mg/kg IV
with IV fluids for 60min. Controls were given IV lipopolysaccharide with IV
fluid without any drug. Blood was assayed for serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma,
superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. There
was a rapid increase in all blood measurements after induction of endotoxemia but after dexamethasone and flunixin
meglumine treatments there were no significant
differences in any blood marker. The findings suggested that IV dexamethasone
and flunixin meglumine
reduced acute phase response to endotoxemia by Escherichia
coli serotype O55:B5 in ewes.
