Sexual maturation of male and female gonads of cultured Beluga (Huso huso), Onl
J Vet Res., 20(5):362-370, 2016. Sexual development in fish can be determined through gonad biopsy
and microscopy. Twenty four farmed 5 yr old Huso huso gonads
were biopsied and subjected to microscopy. Fourteen (58.3 %) were females and
10 (41.7 %) males. In females 7.1% were stage I maturation, 64.3% stage II, and
28.6% stage II-III. In males 40% were stage II, 10% stage III, 20% stage III-IV
and 30% sexual maturation stage IV. Results suggested that at same age, males
matured sexually earlier than females
Key words: Farmed Huso
huso, Gonad, Biopsy, Sexual maturation stages.
