Clinical and sub-clinical prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis and antibiotic resistance by udder halves in ewes.

ABSTRACT

 

Yousif AA, Al Mashadani KM., Clinical and sub-clinical prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis and antibiotic resistance by udder halves in ewes, Onl J Vet Res 25 (1);15-21, 2021. Incidence of clinical and sub-clinical mastitis by Staphylococcus aureus in lactating ewes is reported. California mastitis (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC), bacteriology and antimicrobial sensitivity tests were done to verify mastitis in 100 milk samples. Six ewes had acute mastitis in 12 halves of which 2 were positive to S. aureus. Fifty two samples from 28 ewes were positive to CMT and 14 samples from 5 with 2 halves infected and 4 with 1 halves infected had Staphylococcus aureus. The 14 samples with S aureus were also CMT positive. Prevalence for subclinical mastitis was 26.9% by CMT. Fifty milk samples from 27 ewes consisting of 23 with 2 halves infected and 4 with 1 half affected had SCC of > 500,000 cells /ml. Samples with Staphylococccus aureus had high SCC values. S. aureus were highly sensitive to cefotaxime, erythromycin and ciprofloxacin (100%) but less to amikacin (94.1%), ceftriaxone (88.2%), oxacillin (88.2%) and cephalexin (76.4%).
