Glycyrrhiza
glabra (Licorice) has been shown to have beneficial
effects on healing. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of
Licorice Root Powder (LRP) on cutaneous wound healing. After aseptic surgical
preparations, identical (2×2cm) full thickness wounds were created in the
skin of the dorsal cervical region of 10 rats and 10 untreated control rats.
Treated rats were given LPR topically daily and rinsed with sterile saline for
5 days. Wounds were monitored 21 days and then rats were euthanized. The rate of wound healing was determined planimetrically at day 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20. Histology
revealed differences in re-epithelialization, inflammatory cell infiltration
and tissue organization. Stiffness and ultimate strength of wounds treated with
LPR were not different to controls.
