agglutination tests for equine leptospirosis

J Vet Res., 16 (3):111-116, 2012 The standard test for
equine leptospirosis is the microscopic agglutination
test (MAT) which requires live cultures of Leptospirae and is thus time
consuming. A rapid slide agglutination Test (RSAT) as
tested successfully in humans and dogs, is proposed for horses. Serum samples
from 180 adult racing horses were tested by MAT and compared with RSAT. MAT was
performed using live antigen serovars Australis, Bratislava, Canicola,
Grippotyphosa, Icterohaemorrhagiae
and Copenhageni. Fifty percent reacted to MAT compared
with 44.5% using RSAT. Correlation between RSAT and MAT was r2 =
0.88 at a significance level of p < 0.01. In horses, sensitivity of RSAT
compared with MAT was 88.8%; specificity 100% and efficacy 94.4%.
