ABSTRACT
Nikousefat Z, Hashemnia M, Javdani M., Case Study: Cytological and histopathological features of leproid granuloma in a Rotweiller,
Onl J Vet Res., 19(6): 379-387, 2015. A 3-year-old male Rottweiler with a history of
non-responsive multiple ulcerated alopecic nodules on skin of face and back was
presented for examination. Fine needle aspiration from skin lesions and skin
biopsies showed numerous macrophages with variable numbers of lymphocytes and
plasma cells but low numbers of neutrophils. Pyo-granulomas
in dermis consisting of macrophages, epitheloid
cells, neutrophils,
and fewer lymphocytes or plasma cells and rare giant cells were evident. A large number of acid-fast bacilli
were found in the cytoplasm of macrophages
using Ziehl-Neelsen stain but could not be cultivated
in vitro. A diagnosis of Canine Leproid
Granuloma Syndrome was made based on findings.
Key words: Canine leproid
granulomas, mycobacteria, pyogranulomas, acid fast bacilli.
