Electrophoresis of pre and post-natal sheep and goat optic lens protein

The electrophoretic pattern of optic lens protein of sheep and goat at pre- and postnatal ages was determined. Optic lenses were removed from embryos and postnatal sheep and goat, homogenized and subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Electrophoretic patterns of sheep and goat proteins were similar and the main protein bands were localized in the range of 17-34.4 kDa. With few exceptions, the concentration of proteins was not affected by sex and age of animals at pre- or postnatal stages. In both species, a 19.3 kDa protein was dominant and most concentrated. The concentration of the 20.0 and 34.4 kDa proteins gradually decreased and several low molecular weight proteins (less than 17 kDa) appeared at postnatal ages, suggesting increased proteolysis of lens protein with age. The results indicate that optic lens proteins of sheep and goat are similar to each other and very similar to the published proteins of other species, particularly cattle, but distinctively different from those of camel and chicken.
