ABSTRACT

Tonk RK, Yadav AS, Yadav BR, Crossbred intersex goats with XX chromosomes complement and expression of male sexual behavior, Onl J Vet Res, 14 (1):39-48, 2010. Intersexuality is one of the prime genetical anomalies found in goats. It is usually associated with polledness. In the present study five cases of intersex goats were examined from birth to puberty and beyond for different attributes. All these individuals were polled with XX chromosome configuration, which was confirmed with C- and R-banding techniques. Morphological features recorded at birth and frequently till puberty changed gradually. The location of genital opening varied from normal female to normal male, however, it looked like that of female vulva in four cases. The vaginal opening, which was quite small at birth subsequently at puberty looked quite similar to that of normal female, however clitoris got enlarged, protruded out and could be visible from a distance. The one kid which had testes at later in age penis was found fused with body and genital opening was midway towards location of that of a normal male, though it did not show libido at puberty. On maturity two individuals looked like buck and one developed a prominent beard. The bearded had a strong libido, expressed all the symptoms of a fertile buck. The intersex individuals provide excellent information to study sex mechanisms.
