Persistence of
H9N2 avian influenza virus in lungs and kidneys after inoculation in broilers.

Res., 16 (6): 321-326, 2012. H9N2 avian influenza subtype occurs in
many Eurasian countries producing high mortality in chicken farms. RT-PCR assay
was performed to determine persistence of H9N2 avian influenza viral (AIV) in
lung and kidney of broiler chicken after inoculation. Thirty day old commercial
broilers were inoculated intranasaly with H9N2 low
pathogenic avian influenza virus. Five lung and kidney samples (5 chicks) were
excised at 3, 7, 11 and 15 post inoculation for viral detection by TR-PCR.
Virus was detected at in lungs at days 3 in 20%, 7, 40% 11, 20% 0% at day 15. Virus
detected in kidneys at days 3 in 20% 7, 80% 11, 20% and at day 15, 20%. The
results suggest that H9N2 avian influenza subtype persists in kidneys longer
than other tissues.
