Onl J Vet Res., 17(10):566-570, 2013. Avian Influenza is a contagious viral
disease and a wide range of bird species are susceptible. H9N2
AI virus is endemic in birds in many countries. Game
birds from farms located close to urban areas could spread the virus.
The pattern of heterologous H9N2 avian influenza viral shedding in Alectoris chukar is described. Clinical signs
were also monitored. Fifteen-day-old commercial Alectoris
chukar
were inoculated intranasally with a low
pathogenic A/Chicken/Iran/SH-110/99(H9N2) virus. Viral shedding was determined using
RT- PCR days post inoculation(PI). Virus was detected
in the trachea and cloaca of infected birds 9 days PI. The highest frequency of viral
detection in the trachea and cloaca was observed 3 and 6
days PI, respectively. Coughing, sneezing, depression and decreased feed and
water consumption were observed. The findings suggest that low pathogenic H9N2
AI virus of chicken origin can replicate and shed in a heterologous partridge host and represent an important issue for consideration in the
rearing game birds in close proximity to chicken when an H9N2 LPAI outbreak is suspected or confirmed.
