ABSTRACT

Selk Ghaffari VM, Dezfoulian O., A Spontaneous hepatocellular carcinoma in a Syrian hamster, Onl J Vet Res., 12 (1) :1-6, 2008. A 5-month-old female Syrian hamster that was presented with a history of anorexia, weight loss, and progressive abdominal enlargement. Lateral view of the abdominal radiograph showed substantial loss of intra-abdominal contrast. Further investigation and diagnostic procedures was rejected by the owner. However, necropsy was performed and the gross pathological findings included ascites, hepatomegaly and small hepatic cysts. The tumor was histopathologically diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To the best of the authors` knowledge, regarding the low incidence rate of spontaneous neoplasia in hamsters, this is first report of natural development of hepatocellular carcinoma in a Syrian hamster.
