ABSTRACT

Akhtardanesh B, Mohammadi M, Jamshidi S, Sassani F, Bokaie S Prevalence of Helicobacter spp in stray and domestic cats. Onl J Vet Res 29 (3) 167-177, 2025. We determined prevalence of Helicobacter spp and gastritis in 30 stray and 27 domestic cats by cytology, urease, microscopy and 16s rRNA PCR. Prevalence in domestic cats was 100% in stomach and 82% in antrum and stray cats 57% in body and 43% in antrum. By endoscopy, 77% stomachs appeared normal with 19% gastric erosions and 3.5% ulcers mostly in antrum of domestic cats.  Helicobacter candidatus and H. heilmannii occurred 81% in pets and 43% in strays, urease-positive organisms in 93% and 61% and by cytology 97% and 55% , respectively. By microscopy we found gastritis in 67% cats with no difference between pets and stray. H. pylori was not detected in domestic or stray cats.
