ABSTRACT
Hoseini SM, Youssefi MR, Dozouri R, Omidzahir S, Mousapour A, Eshkevari SR, Roshan RH., Histopathology of intestinal lesions in hedgehogs infested by Moniliformis moniliformis, Onl J Vet Res., 16
(4):240-245, 2012. Parasite and intestinal tissue samples were taken from 10 hedgehogs
preserved in 70% alcohol. After clarification by lactophenol
and staining, acanthocephalan were identified as M.
moniliformis using Yamaguti
keys. Tissue samples were fixed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
Eosinophilic inflammation was found with prominent pyogranulomas with white
abraded surfaces. Typical pyogranulomatous response consisting of
multinucleated giant and epithelioid cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphoid
macrophages and a palisade around the necrotic debris were observed. M. moniliformis may migrate through tissues where it is
trapped in a granuloma and calcified.
Key words: Moniliformis moniliformis, hedgehog, Intestine, pathologic lesions.
