AP, Effect of ciprofloxacin on serum glucose concentration in dogs, Onl J Vet Res, 12 (2):1-4, 2008. Changes in blood glucose due to fluoroquinolones gatifloxacin
and ciprofloxacin have been published. We report effect of ciprofloxacin on
serum glucose levels in dogs. Ten healthy mixed-breed dogs were given 10 mg/kg
ciprofloxacin IV and blood was taken for determination of glucose at 30, 60 and
120 min. Mean ± SE baseline blood glucose levels were 77.32 ±
3.85mg/dl. Subsequent post-treatment mean ± SE values were 77.49 ± 2.20 at 30 min, 81.76 ± 4.39
at 60 min, and 84.10 ± 4.32mg/dl at 120 minutes. Statistical compressions at each
measurement time including the baseline level and post-treatment values
indicated no significant differences. Our results suggest that ciprofloxacin did
not affect blood glucose values in dogs.
