Effect of C5aR antagonist on flea allergen induced dermatitis in
BALB/C mice

induced dermatitis in mice, Onl J Vet Res., 19(8): 508-518, 2015. Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) also known as flea bite
hypersensitivity induced by the flea Ctenocephalides
felis is common in dogs. The effects of C5aR antagonist on dermis and blood
values during flea allergen induced dermatitis in mice is described. BALB/C groups of 5 male and 5 female mice were first exposed
to 100 µg flea antigen via intramuscular and intradermal injections. A control
group was only exposed to flea antigen. Treated mice were injected subcutaneously, daily from
day 1 of antigen exposure, with 0.1mg/kg C5a antagonist, 0.1mg/kg prednisolone
and 0.1mg/kg antihistamine, respectively. There were no significant differences
in total leucocyte count, percentage of lymphocytes, neutrophil and eosinophil
count between any treatment group. Lesions did not
develop in any mice but skin samples from control mice revealed hyperplasia of
the epidermis. Compared with controls, mice treated with C5aR antagonist or
antihistamine showed significant (p<0.05) less thick epidermis.
