ABSTRACT
Al-Dawah
NKJ, Hamzah FZ, Mehdy Zieny SS., Effect of Eugenol supplement on serum hypophysis, thyroid, follicular and
reproductive hormones and lipids in hypothyroid male Wistar
rats., Onl J Vet Res., 26 (11): 802-809, 2022. Authors describe effects of eugenol plant
extract gavage on serum hypophysis, thyroid and testes hormones in hypothyroid
rats over 21 days. To induce
hypothyroidism, 50mg/Kg Propylthiouracil in 1ml
saline was injected IP daily for 1 month in 3 groups of 8 adult male 220-250g Wistar rats each. Rodents were then injected 0.1mg/kg
thyroxine IP daily (1), gavaged 100mg/kg eugenol (EU)
extract (2) or given both (3) Controls were injected saline IP (4). At day 21,
rats were bled for serum TSH, T4, T3, FSH, LH, testosterone (TES),
triglycerides (TG), low-and high density lipoproteins (LDL, HDL, VLDL) and
cholesterol (CH). Compared (P < 0.05 to 0.0001) with controls, in hypothyroid rats, TSH was
lower (<) <~35% and T4 higher (>) >~85%, but >~9% with EU whereas
T3 was <55% with EU <29% and T4
<17%. Serum FSH <56% but with EU or T4 <~5-6% and LH <~56, <28
and <28%, and testosterone <~46, <21 and <7%, respectively. Serum
cholesterol was >34% and >10-16% with EU or T4, TG >23% and >~8
with T4, but normal with EU, HDL <53% and <18% with T4, LDL >55%
higher and >23-41% with EU or T4. Similarly VLDL was 54, 21 and 32% higher
compared with saline controls. Results suggest eugenol prevented reductions in
serum T4 and T3, rises in TSH and reductions in
testosterone in hypothyroid Wistar rats. However,
extraneous T4 injections had similar effect to eugenol.
