ABSTRACT

Bowe EA, Henson FMD, Caddick J, Jeffcott LB, Davies ME. Response of equine articular cartilage to a single impact load.  Onl J Vet Res.,  8: 33-41, 2004. The aim of this study was to investigate the damage caused to equine articular cartilage by a single impact load applied using a simple drop tower device.  An impact load (500g) caused histological changes including fissure formation, disruption of the articular surface and loss of proteoglycan content, which were more marked at a drop height of 10cm compared to 2.5cm. The damage caused by a single impact load from a height of 2.5cm was comparable to that previously reported in exercised horses and in clinical cases of degenerative joint disease. These results indicate that the method of single impact load in cartilage may have potential in the in vitro investigation of equine cartilage damage.

KEY WORDS: Equine, cartilage, load, osteoarthritis.
