ABSTRACT

Radad K, Marwah A, Sary KA, Youssef MS., Effect of cadmium emissions on hematology and tissues in goats, Onl J Vet Res., 28(5): 303-309, 2024. Manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers is associated with the release of cadmium. Tissue and blood samples were taken from 70 adult male goats reared beside a superphosphate factory in Upper Egypt whereas controls were ~10 kilometers further.  Blood and liver, kidneys, lungs, heart and brain were excised from all goats for cadmium levels. Compared with controls blood cadmium was 49, liver 58, kidney 59, lung 43 and heart 67% higher (P < 0.05 -0.001) in goats exposed to emissions. Microscopy revealed vacuolar, fatty degeneration and fibrosis in liver whereas in kidneys we found glomerular swelling and peri-glomerular fibrosis, necrosis of renal tubular epithelial cells, fibrosis and lymphocytic infiltrations. In lungs we observed alveolar emphysema, thickening of alveolar septa and interstitial pneumonia whereas in heart tissue we found myocardial necrosis and fibrosis. In brain neuronal degeneration and activation of glial cells occurred. Findings suggest vascular damage due to cadmium induced microscopical changes in tissues.
