ABSTRACT
El-Dakhly AT, Al-Asadiy YD, Azab AE, Alnagaz RI., Effect
of Echinacea on antibody titres induced by Peste des Petits Ruminants
(PPR) vaccine
in sheep, Onl J Vet Res, 13 (1):106-110, 2009. Echinacea angustifolia may enhance immune function by increasing
antigenic-specific immunoglobulin production. This study was conducted to
determine the possible immuno-stimulatory effect of Echinacea extract when
given with PPR vaccine in sheep. Four groups of 5 sheep each were administered
orally with PPR vaccine (control), and 100%, 60% and 20% with super critical
carbon dioxide (SCD), ethanolic extract of Echinacea,
(EE) respectively. Blood samples were collected from each animal at 7, 14, 21,
28 and 35 days for serum separation. Antibody titre was estimated by ELISA and serum
neutralizing test (SNT). The highest titre of
antibodies was observed in animals treated with 60% and 20% EE which suggests
that EE improved the response of the immune system to PPR. MAIN
Key words: Echinacea, potential immunostimulatory
effect, vaccination.
