ABSTRACT
Mattoo S, Mohindroo
J, Sangwan V., Modified use of surgical skin staples
for treatment of ear hematoma in dogs, Online J Vet Res., 14 (1):28-38, 2010. We describe surgical skin staples and compare
staple and nylon sutures for treatment of ear haematoma in dogs. A pilot trial
was conducted on pinnae of canine cadavers to test surgical skin staples. Fifteen
dogs with aural haematomas were stapled and 10 sutured with nylon. Time taken
for each procedure was recorded. Pinnae were evaluated at 2nd, 4th,
6th, 8th and 10th days for
oedema/inflammation, oozing/discharge, redness, dehiscence and condition of
sutures/staples. Pinnae were evaluated for cosmetic outcome by 3 observers. Time taken for stapling was 67.13 ± 10.12 and for suturing 925.70 ±
73.25 seconds. We found less oedema/inflammation, oozing/discharge,
redness and pain in stapled dogs and cosmetic out comes were excellent in 47%,
good in 33% and fair in 30%. In those sutured with nylon we found outcomes to
be excellent in 10%, good in 40%, fair in 30% and poor in 20%. Surgical skin staples
could replace conventional through and through nylon sutures for treatment of
ear haematoma in dogs.
