ABSTRACT
Elikaei V, Tehrani Sharif, Shahrani H, Rezaeian H, Strychnine doping in race horses., Onl J Vet Res., 27 (9): 523-527, 2023. Strychnine is toxic with
lethal dose 0.5-1mg/kg in dogs, cattle, pigs or horses. Authors report case of strichnine doping of a Turkmen stallion horse 2nd
place in races. Horse was kept in stable for urine sampling within 2 hours.
Samples were tested by ELIZA for NSAIDS, bases, anabolic and corticoid steroids
and strichnine TAO and TA1 tests. The horse tested
positive for strychnine without any adverse effects or signs of poisoning
suggesting very low doses may enhance performance without inducing toxicity.
