Bacterial contamination in multiple-dose medication vials in dairy and poultry farms in Sudan.

Prevalence of aerobic bacteria in multiple-dose veterinary medication vials from 99 of 14 injectable and non-injectable drugs from 13 dairy and 5 poultry farms were investigated. Bacterial contamination was found in 24.2% injectable and 60.6% non-injectable containers. The 9 isolates found included 3 pathogens. Of 66 parenteral and 33 non-parenteral open multiple-dose preparations, 36 (36.4%) were contaminated by 41 isolates, with 2 from every 5 samples. Bacteria included Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.1%), Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus (8.1% each), Micrococcus luteus, Micrococcus varians, Neisseria mucosa, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus auricularis and Staphylococcus epidermidis (1 to 5%). Contamination from parenteral and non-parenteral preparations in dairy or poultry farms was similar. We found high contamination of multiple-dose veterinary medication in Sudan.
